The Division of Archives and History through the office of the director initiates, conducts, manages, and directs all programs of the State of North Carolina which fall under the provisions of the North Carolina Archives and History Act (G.S. Chapter 121) including:

(1)           conducting a records management program for the State of North Carolina;

(2)           operating the North Carolina State Archives;

(3)           editing and publishing materials on the history of North Carolina;

(4)           conducting educational programs on North Carolina history;

(5)           operating the North Carolina Museum of History;

(6)           conducting a highway historical marker program for the state;

(7)           acquiring, developing, operating, and interpreting historic sites for the state;

(8)           conducting a statewide historic preservation program;

(9)           conducting a statewide archaeological conservation and management program;

(10)         operating a grants‑in‑aid program for the preservation and restoration of significant historic properties;

(11)         operating an environmental assessment program to protect historic and archaeological properties from destruction;

(12)         providing all administrative services to the North Carolina Historical Commission;

(13)         providing services and assistance to professional and volunteer organizations throughout the State of North Carolina whose purposes are related to the history of North Carolina.
